Career Development Assignment 1

Besides actually producing a résumé, this is the most important part of this course. It is required and due by the Skills Identification unit.

Write a detailed description of all work experiences: what tasks did you perform, how did you feel, what problems did you experience and solve? Use details such as numbers, facts, dates, skills, knowledge needed, software/tools needed, etc. Think of a specific incident where you handled yourself or the situation well. Think of an incident that you know now could have been handled better (what have you learned since?)

Also, write about other facets of your life in detail such as hobbies, interests, sports, activities (club, school and church), and family (if you are a parent or the family problem solver).

Do not worry about grammar, spelling, etc., since this will be mainly for your use in this class. Do type it, however, so that it is legible and so that you get some typing practice. This may take a long time and a lot of pages but this is necessary for a student to examine this in detail for several reasons:

  1. Refresh memory so that you can answer interview questions easily and smoothly. You will also be able to put the best "spin" possible on your descriptions by identifying terminology that will put you in the best light.
  2. Build self-confidence—what have you accomplished?
  3. Identify specific, special and adaptive skills for use in résumé writing, goal setting, interviewing.
  4. Note life/career patterns that could help you identify work values.
  5. Help formulate life goals and/or compare goals to actual experience.
