Career Development Assignment VI
Complete 4 of the following 6 activities. Write a description of what you did and what the results were.
- Ask the next 10 people you see outside of school where they work. Ask them to describe what their company does and what type of jobs are available there. Ask them if they like their job and the organization they work for. Try to find out why they like it or not. Decide whether you can use these people as contacts. Be prepared to share this information with your classmates and/or teacher.
- Choose an employer from the phone directory yellow pages. How many people must you ask in your neighborhood before you find someone who works there or someone who knows someone that works there?
- Ask 5 people these questions: Do you know someone who works the type of job I am looking for? Would they be willing to meet with me and discuss their employment? How many referrals are you able to get?
- Set up and carry out one information interview. Discuss with your teacher your choices and approach. Be aware that this requires a subtle approach (being very courteous of the employer) because it can backfire if not done properly. This technique has been overused in the past and some employers really don’t like being subjected to this.
- Start writing down your own personal local network. Brainstorm with teacher, students, family and friends who you might use.
- If you are thinking about working outside the local area, use the Internet to research possible jobs and/or localities.
